Eco-Terms
Recycle:
Recycling involves processing used materials into new products in order to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production.
Fair trade:
Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach to empowering developing country producers and promoting sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries.
Reduce Carbon footprint:
A carbon footprint is “the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product” (UK Carbon Trust 2008).
Products that are transferred by sea will emit less carbon emissions than products transferred by air. Products produced in the UK do not have to be transported by sea or plane and will therefore have a smaller carbon footprint.
Eco-friendly Branding
Many manufacturers today use environmentally friendly ink such as soy inks when branding promotional products. As opposed to traditional petroleum-based ink, soy inks are more environmentally friendly, are available in brighter colors, and makes it easier to recycle paper.
Ethically produced:
Ethical consumerism is buying products and services that are made ethically. This may mean with minimal harm to or exploitation of humans, animals and/or the natural environment. Ethical consumerism is practiced through 'positive buying' in that ethical products are favoured, or 'moral boycott', that is negative purchasing and company-based purchasing.
Managed Forests:
Forest management includes a range of human interventions that affect forest ecosystems. These activities include both conservation and economic activities, such as planting and replanting of various species, cutting roads and pathways through forests, and techniques for preventing out breaks of fire.
Pesticide Free:
A pesticide is a substance or mixture of substances used to kill a pest and is usually made from chemicals. Pests include insects, plant pathogens, weeds, molluscs, birds, mammals and fish. Pesticides are harmful to the environment.
PVC free ink / Water based ink:
PVC ink is not only toxic for humans, but it is very harmful to the environment. There are two major schools of screen printing ink; plastisol and water based. Plastisol is PVC based ink and is what the majority of commercial printers use. Water based is, as the name suggests, a water based ink with pigments suspended within it.
Unbleached Cotton:
Bleached cotton treated with chorine and dyes, a highly toxin substance known as 'Dioxins'. Dioxins are among the most toxic man-made chemicals and most harmful to the environment, as shown in laboratory testing on animals.
Most importantly, dioxins cannot be easily destroyed by simple separation, and proper disposal of dioxin is extremely costly. Under certain conditions, particularly when exposed to the intensive sunlight, dioxins can be broken down. However, dioxins cannot be broken down once absorbed by soil or dust or animal tissues. Using organic color dyed cotton or unbleached cotton is the best way to prevent the production and emission of these toxin dioxins.
Seeded Paper
Seeded paper products actually grow into flowers when planted. Made from 100% recycled paper, soy-based inks, & organic pigments. The paper is made from a unique manufacturing process which impregnates the card with flower seeds. When planted, each handmade seed paper sheet acts like mulch to retain moisture for the seeds. Simply plant it indoors or outside, following the instructions included, and it will grow into beautiful flowers.
